5-6A students have been working on limericks as part of their poetry unit.
Horrible child by Kade
There was a horrible child from the moon.
Who slept all afternoon.
He got ice-cream from the fridge at night.
His mum caught him and got a fright.
That horrible child from the moon.
The Snail by Milly
There was an old snail from Bail
Who thought she had a tail
She would chance it all day
Until she would say
I’m a silly old snail from Bail.
The Cat by Bella
There was a cat on a mat
Who sat in a hat
We all know that cats like to chase mice
But this on liked to chase dice
Oh that silly old cat who sat on a mat.
The old man by Hayden
There was a old man at the fair
Who had no hair
He went down the street
On his feet
And threw his shoes in the air.
In classes students from Prep to Year 10 have been working hard on different areas of the Design and Technology Australian Curriculum. A key focus across all year levels has been the design process and producing designed solutions to an opportunity, scenario or a problem. Students have also been learning about healthy eating, the properties of food, the methods of cookery and kitchen safety in food production.
Students in Year 9-10 have been studying nutrition and diet related disease. Recently, they have been exploring commemorational foods and starting to work on their own designs.
In Year 7 and 8 students have been studying the range influences and factors that affect our food choices in life. Some of those factors include cultural and religious factors, environmental and ethical factors, economic and individual or social factors.
In mini modules we have been exploring where our food comes from and what foods are good for us. We have been talking about table manners and participating in making simple recipes. For older students we have begun to follow recipes and create some yummy foods by ourselves and with a partner.

A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting our school next week (Monday 22nd November) to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Year 6 students.
Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activites for the students to complete.
The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, website www.tfseducation.com.au and giveaways.
Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.
The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
Key Fire Safety Messages include,
Wake up - Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom
Plan and practice a home fire escape plan with the whole family
In a fire crawl low and go, go, go to the nearest exit
In an emergency call triple zero
Keep flammable material at least two metres from the heater
If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, rock and roll
Keep matches and lighters away from children
Cooking - Turn it off before you turn away
Cool a burn under cool water for at least 20 minutes
Most house fires can be avoided. Make your home fire safe

Although this week it has not really felt like we are approaching summer, we are already into the second half of the term and Christmas isn’t too far away.
We had a great day last Thursday at the Year 7-10 Athletics carnival and it was pleasing to be able to share the events with a number of parents and families. Thank you to all who attended and supported our students. We had almost 50 students representing the school at the Inter High and we are proud of their efforts.
The day before our Primary school swimming team went to George Town and did an incredible job with some outstanding individual performances. Unfortunately, our lack of depth across age groups meant our relay results weren’t quite at the same level but everyone who participated did so to the best of their ability. We also had very positive reports back from the regional Year 5-6 Girls Footy gala day last Friday.
We have our Year 2-6 carnival this Friday and again are hoping that this is an enjoyable and rewarding event for all our students. These carnivals are not just an opportunity for our best athletes but also another chance for students to learn to win and lose respectfully and to develop their sportsmanship.
We have been hosting our annual Kindergarten transition for students who are starting with us in 2022 and also offering parents an opportunity to get to know the school and ask questions and seek guidance in relation to making their child’s start to education as positive as possible.
As part of our transition programs, we have this years Kindergarten students sharing the ECE playground and it is wonderful to see the inclusive and supportive nature of our children, ensuring that the Kinder pupils get a turn on equipment, get a hand up if they fall over and modelling positive behaviours.
The majority of our Year 6 students have had the opportunity to spend time in our Year 7-8 classes during the last 3-4 weeks as part of the transition program being coordinated by Mr Robertson and supported by all our teachers of 7-8. This is still a critical change for these young people and the opportunity to have these experiences in a supported and meaningful way we trust is a great investment for a smooth move into high school.
A big thank you to all our volunteers who contribute to our school and support us to be able to offer everything we can. Be it coordinating our book club program, the incredible assistance provided in the canteen or the planning and organisation for the school fair – these are all great examples of people making a positive difference for our school and the students.
We continue to promote and foster the school’s expectations to Be Safe, to Be Respectful and to Be a Learner. When students take this mindset to their decision-making we create and maintain a learning focussed school. As students get tired towards the end of the term or are adjusting to a change either in classes or areas of the school, we often see these characteristics falling off a little. Please continue to support your child/ren to meet their needs, especially in regard to regular sleep so that they can finish the year in a strong and positive manner.
Please remember that when you are visiting the school that we need you to follow the protocols with regards to Checking in and Signing in when you are entering buildings and classrooms. We are looking forward to all our end of year celebrations and sharing these opportunities with our students and as many of their family members as COVID restrictions will allow.

We are now accepting enrolments for 2022 for Kinder. If you have a child of Kinder age, please ensure you return your enrolment forms to the office with the additional information required as soon as possible. We need to have an accurate indication of student numbers for 2022 to ensure we have the facilities and enough resources for their needs.
If you know of families moving into the area and/or wishing to enrol, please have them contact the school as early as possible.

Students are also NOT required to check-in, these arrangements only apply to adults.
We have posters displayed in and around the school site with the QR code to use for checking in.
For those who do not have a smart phone and need to manually check-in, please come to the school office for assistance.
We appreciate your support in ensuring we are doing the right thing.

Message from the Commonwealth Bank
Saying goodbye to School Banking
Sadly, our School Banking program will not be returning to schools in 2022.
School Banking is closing nationally
We’re sad to announce that the CommBank School Banking program will not be returning to schools in 2022.
For 90 years, our School Banking program has helped children learn about money, reinforced the importance of regular savings and provided structure for parents to support their children to save.
We've had strong support from thousands of schools, parents and teachers across the country who choose to run our program. We’re disappointed with the position taken by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and subsequent decisions by some state and territory governments to take that choice away from individual schools and parents. Because of the ASIC review and these government decisions, we’re unable to continue providing programs in schools, and we’ve had to make a difficult decision to close our School Banking program nationally for all schools, both government and non-government, across the country.
NEXT NEWSLETTER
Our next newsletter is due out on Tuesday, 30 November.

Conservation Volunteers Australia Student Video and Poster Competition
Entries open from 5-18 years of age.
Conservation Volunteers Australia are currently delivering a project called #SeaToSource, a national campaign aimed at empowering communities to reduce litter in our waterways. We aim to engage people of all ages and backgrounds – including school communities, students, and young people more broadly.
As part of the project, we are currently hosting a poster and video competition for students. The competition challenges young people to create innovative solutions that stop ocean litter at the source. We’re calling on students to get creative and to design a poster or video, demonstrating how a common ocean litter item could be repurposed or reinvented, or how others in the community can be inspired to change their usage of these items, to create positive change for our incredible marine life.
Curriculum links and ideas for integrated learning design are available for teachers.
Prizes will be awarded to the best entry in three age groups:
- 8 years old and under
- 9-12 years old
- 3-18 years old
Australian Geographic Magazine is also providing a reward for all valid entries.
- The competition will run until December 3rd, 2021, 5pm AEST.
- For more information about the competition and to enter, visit our website.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the competition, or how your school can get involved in #SeaToSource more broadly.
