In Prep this year we have been investigating how plants grow and what the different observable features of plants are.
We began by looking at leaves and the differences and similarities we could see in the leaves at school. We grouped them by these different features – shiny, spikey, soft, rubbery, long, thin, small, round and so on. We also planted some broad bean seeds in cotton wool in a glass container to see how they grow. We were fascinated with how much they grew every day, and which parts of the plant grew first. We made predictions of what the seeds would grow into, and once they were fully grown seedlings we drew what we could see and did some research to discover what each part of the plant is called. Finally, we made our own seedlings out of puffy clay.
We were very impressed with the Prep’s ability to group similar features, represent their learning in multiple authentic ways, and use their observations to inform their questions and predictions. To finish off our unit, we planted our broad bean seedlings in the Kinder garden bed and look forward to watching them flower and produce beans!

9-10C have made a brilliant start to Term 2 following on from their hard work in Term 1.
In Mathematics we have looked at finding the Surface Area and Volume of many different shapes and how this applies to the real world. As a class we worked in small groups to create eye catching posters that demonstrated our understanding of the different formulas.
Lilydale District School was proudly represented at the ANZAC services in Lilydale today by Student Leaders from the junior and senior school. As well as laying a wreath, they also gave a presentation at the services about the importance of the ANZAC spirit, the concept of mateship and shared personal stories and family connections.

Moderation Day
Thursday, 6 April was a professional learning day for staff. Teachers participated in an online session facilitated by curriculum services about the use of Common Assessment Tasks. The second session was an opportunity for teachers at Lilydale to work with teachers from Port Dalrymple school analysing and discussing student work samples. In the afternoon teachers worked in their Professional Learning Teams to consider new learnings and how these can be reflected in planning. Feedback from staff is that they value the opportunity to work with other schools.
At Lilydale we have high expectations of students being learners in class. This is a multi-faceted approach and relies on all of us to reinforce these expectations.
Teachers demonstrate high expectations by being prepared with orderly learning environments, the use of mindfulness, brain breaks, resest and learning tasks that cater for all student abilities.
Students demonstrate high expectations by attending regularly, being prepared, and being in class.
We continue to model and reinforce this expectation as a community of learners.
Communicating with families
We value our relationships with parents and carers and know that communication between families and teachers is an important part of supporting students to be successful at school. Staff at Lilydale can be contacted via email, phone or in person. Teachers can be reached by using their DECYP email address, contacting the school office or in person. Schools can be busy places and we ask that if you require an in-person conversation that you make an appointment through the office so we can give the proper time and attention to your queries.
Uniform
As the weather cools off it is a timely reminder for students to locate their Lilydale jumpers, hoodies, or jackets. To ensure articles of uniform that have been taken of are returned to their owner, please ensure that they have a name in them.

Tuesday, 16 May Week 4
This year the Whole School Cross Country event at Lilydale District School on Tuesday, 16 May will be a Cross Country Colour Run.
The CUA School Colour Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while raising funds for school equipment and resources. Students are treated to a great day for their fundraising efforts with family support and encouragement the key to our fundraising success.
Throughout the Cross Country, staff and parent volunteers will be spraying paint powder below the shoulders of participants as they pass by in certain sections of the course. Students can choose to avoid paint powder sections if they wish. Students are encouraged to wear a white top for the vibrant colours to stand out.
All students will receive a sponsorship form with instructions on how to participate, raise money and order prizes. Over the next 6 weeks, students can use online fundraising and their sponsorship booklets to collect cash and online donations.
Students who raise $10 or more are eligible to receive a prize. The more you raise the better your prize can be. You could get all sorts of prizes, from handballs or squishy balls, right through to a Drone, X-Box or a Dirt Bike!
We encourage students to seek sponsorship from family, aunts, uncles, friends, neighbours. If you’re door knocking – have your parent or an adult with you – safety first
On the day of the event the year groups will be running the following distances.
Kinder students will run 600m
P-2 = 1km – 1 lap
3-4 = 2km – 2 laps
5-6 = 3km – 3 laps
7-8 = 4 km – 4 laps

Lilydale District School had a tremendous day out at the Inter-High Athletics on what was a pearler of a last day of Term One - Wednesday 5 April at St Leonards Athletics Centre. 37 of our students represented the school in what was a successful day. We got very close to winning either Junior or Senior shields, which meant we narrowly missed out on the overall with St. Helens District just pipping us.
More importantly, it was the student performances that were really pleasing to see. To the students that may have only been in a few events, that helped with the running of the field events assigned to us. The team all chipped in. Thanks, must also go to those students that put their hand up when we were an athlete down. All of these moments and efforts go a long way to an enjoyable carnival.
There were a few highlights throughout the day with individual and team success, so unfortunately, we cannot name them all, but here is just a snapshot.
- The Year 7 team with 8 students holding their own against fellow competitors with Thea & Freya excelling.
- Haylee – Year 8 winning the long-distance races the 800m and the 1500m.
- Year 8 Boys crossing the line in first for their relay.
- Makira – Year 9 receiving more 1st placed blue ribbons than most, and the Year 9 Girls team of four students doing a fabulous job, even managing to win their relay.
- Jack and Josh – Year 9, juggling most if not close to all the events with the two of them and managing podium finishes.
- The Year 10’s lapping up their last Inter-High with strong performances – a highlight the boys relay win.
Thank you to the staff that supported the students in a fun way to cap off the term.
