We trust everyone had a great long weekend and that you were able to do something together to further your connections with family. We understand that there are many pressures for families currently. If you need assistance relating to your child’s academic, social or emotional needs, please contact the office and make an appointment, so that we can ensure that there is appropriate time to understand how we can best assist.
The Department for Education, Children and Young people has been created by combining the Department for Education and the Department of Communities. Through a strategic approach, values, services and shared responsibilities have been rationalised with the view to providing better outcomes for families.
Earlier in the year we were participated in a DECYP External Review. Through observations from a panel of three current Principals along with direct conversations with staff, students and some parents there was some positive feedback along with some recommendations about how to make Lilydale even better.
- The school staff value collegiality and care about each other on a personal and professional level.
- Whole-staff professional learning on trauma-informed practice has supported greater consistency of practice through the co-construction of the Lilydale Ready to Learn Model.
- The staff of the school demonstrate an understanding of the importance of positive and caring relationships to successful learning, and work to build respectful relationships.
- The school provides a broad range of options, mini modules and student pathways that support student engagement and interest.
- The school is providing extra time and support for students through an evidence-informed Tier 3 Phonics program.
- Staff use pre- and post-tests to assess understanding and inform next steps in learning.
There were also 4 key recommendations which will form the basis for longer term work for the school. Some of these have been included in the 2023 School Improvement Plan and will inform the work staff do together at weekly planning meetings, staff meetings and on professional learning days.
- Lead the development and consistent implementation of tight collaborative inquiry structures and processes to achieve highly effective collaborative teams that focus on improved teacher practice and student outcomes.
- Lead the co-construction of high expectations for a school environment that is safe, respectful, inclusive, promotes intellectual rigour, and builds a greater sense of belonging. This will be strengthened by ensuring the consistent implementation of an agreed set of expectations for behaviour and learning.
- Develop a shared knowledge and understanding of evidence-informed teaching strategies, including all phases of the Lilydale District School Instructional Model, that will be seen in every classroom. Make clear the links between curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment with reference to the DECYP support documents.
- Develop and embed a school-wide observation and feedback culture that supports staff learning, growth and consistency of practice.
We have been able to celebrate many successes with students in the past fortnight. We have an increasing number of students bringing in their 60/100 days of reading records, with most of our Kinder students achieving this goal. Each child achieving their target is receiving their certificate and a book to take home. You should see an increasing number students on our Facebook page in the coming weeks as they celebrate their achievement.
Well done to our primary representatives at the Cross Country last Wednesday. All our students did an excellent job, especially our Year 3 and Year 5 girls teams who all finished in the top 10 along with Callum, Cooper and Charlie who won their age groups.
We are seeing an increase in the number of families bringing students to school. Please ensure that you are following the speed limit and if you are walking students to class that you park in the main car park not the drop off zone.

Principal
Last week the K - 2 children had a special visitor! Aboriginal elder Uncle Hank Horton came to help us learn about Tasmanian aboriginal culture, including bush foods, tools and weapons and clothing. Please read our writing to find out more.
The 7-8B Team have been successfully completing the Push-Up Challenge during the month of June, in a bid to raise important mental health awareness. The Push-Up Challenge Foundation motivates individuals and groups to complete 3,144 push-ups during the month of June, this number is significant as it is unfortunately the number of deaths to suicide in 2021 in Australia. The 7-8 classes among other staff and year groups across the school have been engaging within this large mental health fitness event, which is fabulous.
This mental health fitness event correlates with what the learning from Health and PE classes has been currently. Students have been unpacking the benefits to being physically active.
We have also been looking at what it means to be successful and celebrating our differences and using our strengths as team within transition class time and carrying out this mentality throughout the school day and week.
Across the classroom, our 7-8B Team have also been engaged learners about informative texts and writing reports about endangered animals from those learnings in English. Vikings have been the topic in HASS, with the focus on different social classes, weaponry, and trade.
Recently our students in Mathematics have completed assessments involving rational numbers through decimals, fractions, and percentages. Students in Science have used a variety of separation techniques throughout the Chemistry unit in a challenge to separate different mixtures effectively returning the materials to their original mass prior to mixing.
There are always opportunities that arise for the students, and we have been impressed with those students that have maximised these opportunities, either through their option classes or external to the classroom on an extra-curricular level. We hope our class can continue to support and celebrate positive choices that are made on a daily basis which contribute to tomorrow’s success.

On Tuesday, 30 May, students from Lilydale District School competed at the annual inter-high Cross Country hosted by Kings Meadows High School. The behaviour exhibited by our students was exemplary and we could not be prouder of their conduct.
Our students pushed themselves physically in their respective races and showed a great deal of compassion and pride while supporting each other.
Congratulations to the following students for finishing in the top 10:
Haylee (Year 8) – 7th Overall (3rd Division 2)
Jack (Year 10) – 6th Overall (1st Division 2)

We are looking for 60L drums to use as garbage bins around the school. It is a fun activity for the students to showcase their artistic imagination to make the school look brighter.
If you have any 60L drums you would like to donate to the school, it would be greatly appreciated.
