On Wednesday 30th August we had a Father’s Day breakfast in Kinder. Kinder children were excited to help their Dads/Pops/Grandads make and eat some breakfast, and to show them around our classroom and playground. The children had also made Father’s Day placemats, which they were able to give out to their special people. After eating, we spent time playing together with a variety of activities both inside and outside. As you can see from the happy faces in the photos, we had a great morning together!

In 3-4A our most recent HASS unit has been on environments. In particular, looking at different vegetation zones around the world. We explored the flora and fauna of each zone and students created a tria-rama to explain their thinking and understanding, using natural resources and their creativity.

We have some exciting opportunities coming up for our Year 9-10 students.
Resume and Cover Letter Workshop
On Wednesday September 13th Mas National will be coming in to provide support around resume and cover letter writing for Year 9-10 students. This would be essential for students looking at applying for apprenticeships and VET courses. Mas work with connecting job seekers with employers and can also help students with what qualifications they need for the job or if they need assistance in an interview. Students interested will need to put their name down as positions are limited. It is recommended that the students bring their resume and cover letter with them for feedback.
Work placement
Year 9-10 students are able to complete a work placement at a business to gain further understanding of that industry. Students who are interested in work placements are required to contact places and then inform the school if they have been successful. They can also discuss a placement with Mrs Denehy if they need some help finding a business. The school will then need to complete the required paperwork to ensure that the student and the business are covered by insurance.
White Card, RSA and First Aid
Earlier in the year 9-10 students were able to indicate if they were interested in doing a White Card, Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) or First Aid course. All these courses are accredited certificates and essential for many areas of work. Student attending these courses should already have the applications in.
The dates for these courses are:
- White Card – September 19th and 20th at Lilydale District School
- RSA – November 28th at Drysdale (students to organise own transport)
- First Aid – December 5th and 6th at Lilydale
Komatsu Site Tour
There will be an excursion to Komatsu on Wednesday October 18th for Year 9-10 students that are interested in heavy machinery. Komatsu are looking for an apprentice Diesel Technician and possibly a Parts Interpreter. We will be participating in a site tour and students will be able to indicate if they are interested in a work placement in this area.
In 7-8C we have had a heavy focus on our school mantra, ‘We are our best when we are safe, respectful and learning’ in all learning areas, in particular, Transition. Together, we have unpacked, discussed, and gained a collective understanding on what it means to ‘be our best’ when we are at school. As this has been a focus of ours, we have tried our best to be organised, be on time and ready to learn with all our learning materials. Gaining this understanding has helped us become successful learners, we will continue to work on this as the year progresses.
Across the whole term, we have been extremely busy learning new concepts and knowledge in all learning areas. In History, we have been engaging in an in-depth study on the Vikings. This included learning about the social structure, longboats and the different roles and achievements of significant individuals throughout the Viking period. At the conclusion of the unit, we explored the different types of armour and weaponry used, which resulted in us designing and making our own Viking shields (pictured below). This was an enjoyable activity that allowed us to show our creativity, whilst we demonstrated our understanding from the Viking learning.
In English, we have been mastering the art of persuasion. We have explored the many persuasive devices that help us argue our opinions. Many of us used rhetorical questions to get the reader thinking about our stance on our particular topic we had chosen. We have also practiced our research skills, by finding evidence, data and statistics to back our arguments. To conclude this unit of work, we will be writing and presenting a persuasive speech to a small group of students in our class.
At the beginning of the term, we started our dance unit in PE. Throughout this unit, we explored line dances such as, the Wiggle dance, the Macarena, Cha-Cha Slide and many more. To demonstrate our learning, we completed a group assessment dance, that required us to perform movements in unison with other performers using dance pathways. Initially, we were not very keen on the idea, however, once we started, we had a lot of fun and performed confidently because we can all dance! Currently, we are learning about and practicing the many fundamental skills, and techniques Volleyball, Tennis and Badminton have to offer.
As a school we are continuing to work collaboratively within classes to help students understand our mantra that “We are our best when we are Safe, Respectful and Learning.” Class teachers are continually revisiting this with the approach to help students reflect and review their choices both in the classroom and the playground. We are sharing exemplars of our work at staff meetings and also planning together in our professional learning teams (PLTs) to ensure that our communication is clear and consistent.
Currently selections are occurring for the role of Year 7 Educational Support Specialists in a number of District Schools. This funding is specifically for the employment of an Education Support Specialist (ESS) who will be trained and supported to deliver a prescribed reading intervention program to identified Year 7 students. The extra support and programs for intervention are being refined and developed to maximise the resource in the right areas.
We are looking at ways of working with LDPA re community events. The approach will be to liaise with key members and link up our prospective 2024 student leaders during Term 4 to develop and phase in co-planned initiatives and make sure that the events meet the needs of our broader community. Similarly, we are looking for mentors in our community who may be able to spare an hour or two a week, fortnight or monthly to work practically with some of our students in a range of areas of interest.
Unfortunately, we have been notified that Before School Care will be unavailable in the mornings during the remainder of the term, due to staffing issues. Our current carer is off on maternity leave and Adventure Patch haven’t been able to secure a replacement. We are very hopeful that this will be addressed for Term 4 as we know that this has a direct impact on families. If you know of anyone with the necessary skills and qualifications, please contact the school office and we can put them in touch with Adventure Patch.
I am pleased with the ongoing standard of uniform and buoyed by the increase in attendance this term. Thank you for your collective support in these areas. I strongly encourage all families to complete the school satisfaction survey, so that we can get a balanced picture of how you are feeling about the school’s role in your child’s education. The survey can be accessed via the link provided.
