Kinder - Hagley Farm School Excursion
The Kinders hopped on the bus on Tuesday, 12 November, very excited for our excursion to Hagley Farm! When we arrived we fed the ducks some breakfast, and we got to touch a freshly laid duck’s egg – it was still warm!
Next we had morning tea and a play on the playground before going into the dairy shed and getting to meet and pat Strawberry the cow. We went to the shearing shed next and felt 2 different types of wool, which we were allowed to keep if we wanted to. We then walked over to the animals and watched the pigs being fed. Next we got to feed and pat some sheep, alpacas, and goats. After lunch and another play on the playground we got to pat a baby chick. We then went on a tractor ride to the adult chickens. We got to feed the chickens and put their eggs into trays. Some children were even brave enough to pick up a chicken!
We then got back on the tractor trailer to drive around the rest of the farm. We saw a horse and some more sheep, cows and calves in our travels, and passed another tractor slashing some grass. During our excursion we learnt about different animal attributes, such as their features, life cycles, care, and use of these animals on a farm.
We then got back on the bus to Lilydale, with many children declaring it to be the “the best day ever!”
What an AMAZING creative output from Lilydale students
Students from kinder to year ten have been creating public art works for:
- Drea The Flying Dragon of Dreams - 500 decorated scales and is now flying in the QVMAG Inveresk entrance. The challenge for students is to find their work/s if they visit!
- A series of upcycled YES t-shirts that were modelled at REMADE on Saturday.
- Wearable artworks that were showcased to an audience of 300 at REMADE Sustainable Wearable Art event.
The 7-10 Art Excursion to Inveresk had students discussing art with the UTAS 3rd year students Estelle and Fenella about the work in the current graduate show. They enjoyed seeing Lilydale works exhibited and interacting at the museum and on site. Huge thanks to David, Jess and Dee for supporting this arts experience and to the students for their exemplary behaviour.
It is easy to be drawn to the negative however last Thursday I was able to witness first-hand several of our representatives at a recent school basketball match, display significant maturity and empathy for an opposition player. The student has a disability but is being included by his school into their team. Our team were also highly inclusive, allowing the student to play without unnecessary pressure and encouraging him respectfully on the court. When he scored a goal our players celebrated with the student despite being behind in the game. This inclusive attitude and sportsmanship are indicative of so many of our students at the school and to have this demonstrated publicly was great to watch. Congratulations to Mr Smith and Mr Taylor for not only giving up their time to support our students to play, but also for their guidance and support with students to be their best, even in a competitive environment.
We had a great series of entries for the Scottsdale Show last week. Our Preps and Year 3-4s all attended and were super excited when they returned. We had a good number of students who received placings and commendations for their artwork, sewing, cooking and photography. It is always such a positive to showcase student strengths and passions to a wide audience. Well done to everyone who put an entry forward.
Thank you to those families who provided feedback to our staff regarding class placements for 2025. With a change of numbers across some grades we are investigating having several classes with straight grades for 2025. This will streamline planning for staff but also ensure that all students in these classes have Tier One provision for their learning. After consultation with experts, DECYP will be supporting.
Word Origins: A Year 3-6 Spelling and Word Study Program as the preferred program to be used in Tasmanian Government schools. We are excited to continue to grow our literacy programs, ensuring that they are research informed and leading to best practice.
I wanted to take the opportunity to thank our Teacher Assistants for their tireless work. They often have to change roles or foci at short notice to enable us to have the most appropriate support available for all our students who required differentiated learning. Their passion and commitment to ensuring the best for each one of the students that they work with is fantastic. We are very lucky to have so many great people in our school.
We are looking to provide some further supports for some of our students into 2025. We believe that we will be supported in running an equine assistance program at the school farm and based on current information we are very likely to have a full provision of Professional Support Staff in 2025. This will likely mean the following fortnightly support: six days of Social Work, five days of our Psychologist, two days with a school nurse and at least a day a week of Speech Pathology.

NHSSA Athletics Carnival - Report
On Wednesday, 20 November, the Lilydale District School Athletics team proudly represented their school at the annual Inter High Athletics held at sunny St Leonards. The team, buzzing with energy and anticipation, boarded the bus early in the morning, their chatter a lively blend of excitement and nerves. As they arrived at the track, the atmosphere was charged with the thrill of competition.
Any lingering nerves melted away after the students participated in their first events, buoyed by the enthusiastic cheers from teammates, teachers, and the many supportive parents who had come to watch. The encouragement created an uplifting sense of camaraderie and pride, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.
Throughout the competition, the students displayed exceptional athleticism, pushing their limits and competing fiercely across a range of events, from sprints and long-distance runs to high jump and discus. Each athlete’s determination and sportsmanship shone brightly, as they embraced challenges and celebrated personal bests.
Their collective efforts brought the team closer together, and their commitment to giving their all made Lilydale District School immensely proud. Whether earning podium finishes or demonstrating perseverance in the face of tough competition, every athlete contributed to an unforgettable day. The team left the track not only with ribbons but also with the admiration of their school community and a deep sense of achievement.
Pool Safety is everyone's business - message from the Department of Education, Childen and Young People.
As we approach the end of the school term and the upcoming summer holidays, we believe it is crucial to raise awareness about swimming pool safety, especially among young children who are most vulnerable to pool-related incidents.
The DECYP have prepared a flyer containing vital safety information in the hope it will help prevent accidents and promote safe swimming practices.
Please find the time to read over the flyer included in this article.
